1881. Estimates to $8500. I think as the Revenue is flourishing there is no objection to such an increase.
259 Medical. There is an increase in various items in the Civil Hospital. The query as to the Wardmaster in the Smallpox hospital and Lunatic Asylum.
The Police Magistrates, The Coroner made last year. Salary should be reflected. The larger sum has been wrongly put at 960 dollars; 720 is the proper amount, as only an exceptional arrangement was sanctioned in Mr. Planket's case. This should be pointed out.
Police. The increases to the Clerk's salary are subject to the despatch of the Lieutenant Governor respecting the subject.
MINUTE PAPER. $35000 dollars is voted for the New Water Police Station Estimates: The work is to be necessary, but I have not been aware that we have ever received detailed plans and estimates for it; an enquiry on the subject should be made on receipt of particulars. Mr. Price tells me that it is to be built in an utterly unsuitable position; it should not be sanctioned till we receive full particulars.
$20000 is voted for the Observatory; $10,000 in last year's estimates; I do not think we have received details for this work again.
$6000 dollars for Salaries were sanctioned in Lord Kimberley's despatch No. 78 of the 5th July last.
There is an increase under Bedding, Passages, etc., for Exclusion Establishment.
Works and Buildings. The total increase under this head as against the last Estimates is $26000; the 1880 Estimate was $25500.
A report has been sent by the Administrator for the new Lunatic Asylum. No vote was made for this work in last estimates; I think we have not had the plans for this work yet; and a report was called for from him in Kimberley's despatch No. 10 of the 10th August, to which reference should be made.
